John Merrill is a Managing Director leading business development efforts and strategic relationship management with Endowment and Foundation (E&F) clients among other types of institutional investors and financial institutions. He advises on holistic portfolio solutions, strategy-specific mandates with a focus on alternative investments, and OCIO relationships. John leads Makena’s New York office. Prior to joining Makena, John was a Managing Director and a member of the Investment Committee at The Investment Fund for Foundations (“TIFF”) where he led the OCIO practice for over a decade. Additionally, he managed the client acquisition efforts and the servicing of existing client relationships. As a member of TIFF’s Investment Committee, John participated in asset allocation decisions and the selection and monitoring of external managers. Before joining TIFF, John was a Vice President in the Investment Services Group of Donaldson, Lufkin, Jenrette then Credit Suisse First Boston in New York. Prior to business school, John spent five years in the Capital Markets Group of PricewaterhouseCoopers and fulfilled a two-year commitment with Teach For America in Los Angeles. John holds a BA in History with Honors from Hamilton College and an MBA from the Yale School of Management.
